Daily Itinenary

The Adventure Begins in Guwahati

Arrive in Guwahati throughout the day and settle in for an overnight stay before the expedition begins. This is the staging point for the journey, where the group gets organised for the days ahead. Motorcycle travellers can have their bikes inspected and luggage secured, while all travellers can prepare for the mountain route ahead. In the evening, the tour captain conducts a formal briefing covering the route, travel requirements, safety considerations and what to expect during the expedition. There is no long-distance travel today — the focus is on preparation, meeting the group and getting ready for the climb from Assam's plains into the mountains of Arunachal Pradesh.

Leaving the Plains, Entering the Mountains

The journey leaves the flat plains of Guwahati and heads towards the Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border, crossing into Arunachal around Bhalukpong. From here, the landscape begins to change as the route climbs through dense subtropical forest, following the Kameng River deeper into the foothills. The warm and humid conditions of the plains gradually give way to cooler mountain air as the road begins to twist and climb. For motorcycle travellers, this is the first real introduction to the winding roads, hairpins and changing riding conditions of the expedition, while SUV travellers experience the same transition from the plains into the mountain terrain. Jamiri provides a relatively moderate first mountain day before the route reaches higher elevations.

Deeper Into the Arunachal Mountains

From Jamiri, the route continues steadily towards Jung, taking the group deeper into the mountains and through changing forest landscapes as the elevation increases. The road alternates between stretches of decent tarmac and sections that require more careful navigation, particularly around the remote border-area roads. Along the way, waterfalls, river crossings and changing terrain add to the character of the journey, while the air becomes noticeably cooler as the group gains altitude. The day gradually prepares travellers for the more demanding sections ahead. By the time the group reaches Jung for the night, the landscape has changed considerably from the forests and foothills encountered earlier in the expedition, marking the final stage before the journey pushes towards the high mountain passes.

The Ultimate Mountain Challenge

This is the expedition's most demanding day, taking the group from Jung towards Mago and onward to Gongkhar La Lake before descending into the Tawang valley. The route becomes increasingly remote as the journey progresses, with narrow and broken sections of road, limited settlements and long stretches surrounded by high-altitude terrain. Beyond Mago, the landscape turns distinctly alpine, with bare ridgelines, cold winds and thin air as the elevation rises above 4,000 metres in stretches. The journey requires careful and deliberate travel through loose gravel, steep switchbacks and occasional snow patches. After reaching the high point, the route begins its descent towards Tawang, where the group arrives by evening after one of the most challenging and remote sections of the expedition.

A Day to Discover Tawang

After the demanding journey into Tawang, Day 5 provides a welcome break from long-distance travel. The day is centred around exploring Tawang and experiencing some of the area's important landmarks and local surroundings. Visit the historic Tawang Monastery, spend time at the war memorial and explore the local markets before returning to the town for the evening. This is also an opportunity to slow the pace after the previous day's high-altitude journey and prepare for the next major excursion. While there is no long-distance route today, the group may use the available vehicles for short local journeys around Tawang as they explore the town and its surroundings.

Into the High-Altitude Borderlands

The journey continues from Tawang towards Ptso Lake, Madhuri Lake and the legendary Bumla Pass before returning to Tawang the same day. The route climbs rapidly out of the Tawang valley into stark, treeless high-altitude terrain, with glacial lakes appearing along the way. Beyond Madhuri Lake, the road continues towards Bumla Pass at approximately 4,600 metres, where cold temperatures, thin air and changing road conditions add another layer of challenge to the journey. The group travels carefully through this high-altitude landscape before beginning the return journey to Tawang. As daylight fades and temperatures drop, the descent brings the group back through the same dramatic mountain terrain before reaching Tawang for the night.

Leaving the High Mountains Behind

The journey now begins its long descent from Tawang, reversing much of the climb experienced earlier in the expedition. The route travels through Jang and Dirang as the landscape gradually changes from high-altitude alpine terrain to greener mountain valleys and forested surroundings. As the elevation falls, the air becomes warmer and vegetation becomes more abundant. The route eventually reaches Sangti Valley, a peaceful river valley surrounded by pine forests and apple orchards. After the demanding high-altitude sections of the previous days, this part of the journey offers a noticeably more relaxed landscape, with wider curves and a gentler route providing an opportunity to take in the scenery and enjoy the changing character of Arunachal Pradesh.

One Last Ride Through the Hills

The final major travel day begins in Sangti Valley and continues through Shergaon before the route gradually descends out of the mountains towards the Assam plains. The journey through Shergaon brings open meadows, highland villages and the final stretches of mountain scenery before the road begins its long descent towards Tezpur. As the landscape opens up, the winding mountain roads give way to faster and more open highway stretches, marking the transition back to the plains. The group continues towards Guwahati, arriving by evening for an overnight halt. After several days among the high mountains of Arunachal Pradesh, this final descent marks the closing stage of the main expedition route.

One Last Stop Before Home

The expedition comes to a close with a short journey to Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati. Take some time to visit one of the region's important landmarks before returning for departure arrangements. After the final stop, travellers can begin their onward journey from Guwahati, bringing the expedition from the plains, through the forests and mountains of Arunachal Pradesh, and back to where it began. With the final day kept relatively short, there is time to complete the departure formalities without adding another long-distance journey to the end of the trip.
