The Tawang Experience

Tawang is more than a destination at the end of a mountain road. It is a journey through changing landscapes, high-altitude passes, remote Himalayan settlements and some of the most dramatic terrain in Northeast India.
This expedition takes you beyond simply reaching Tawang. From the plains of Assam, the route gradually climbs into Arunachal Pradesh, crossing the legendary Sela Pass before reaching Tawang. From there, venture towards the high-altitude frontier of Bum La and the stunning Madhuri Lake before descending through Sangti Valley and eventually returning to Assam.
The journey doesn't end with the mountains. A safari through Kaziranga adds a completely different experience before you return to Guwahati.

In the evening, meet your Road Captain and fellow travellers for the expedition briefing. Get acquainted with the group, understand the route ahead, go through important riding and safety guidelines, and prepare for the mountain roads that await you.
End the day with a welcome dinner and a relaxed evening before the expedition officially begins.

Guwahati to Jamiri | Into the Mountains

After breakfast, begin your expedition from Guwahati and ride towards Arunachal Pradesh. As you leave the city behind, the landscape gradually changes from the plains of Assam to greener surroundings, with river valleys, tea gardens and mountain villages appearing along the route.
Stop along the way for lunch at a scenic café or local eatery before continuing deeper towards the mountains. By evening, arrive at Jamiri and check in to your homestay.
As the day's riding comes to an end, gather around a bonfire, enjoy a barbecue and take in the peaceful mountain atmosphere before resting for the night.

Jamiri to Tawang | Crossing the High Himalayas

Start early after breakfast as the journey takes you deeper into the Eastern Himalayas towards Tawang. The roads gradually climb through increasingly dramatic mountain terrain, bringing you closer to some of the most spectacular landscapes of the expedition.
The route takes you through the Sela Tunnel before ascending towards the legendary Sela Pass, situated at approximately 13,700 feet. Continue onwards with a stop at Jaswant Garh War Memorial, paying tribute to the soldiers who defended this remote frontier.
Further along the route, stop at the spectacular Nuranang (Jung) Falls, where water cascades dramatically through the Himalayan landscape. Continue towards Tawang and arrive by evening.

Tawang | Monastery, Culture & Local Exploration

After breakfast, take a break from the long-distance riding and spend the day exploring Tawang. Surrounded by mountains and steeped in Buddhist culture, Tawang offers a completely different experience from the journey through the mountain roads.
Begin with a visit to the magnificent Tawang Monastery, followed by the Giant Buddha Statue overlooking the surrounding mountains. Continue to the Tawang War Memorial, an important landmark commemorating the soldiers who served in the region.
The rest of the evening is yours to experience Tawang at your own pace. Explore the local markets, stop at a café, walk through the mountain town or simply relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Bum La Pass & Madhuri Lake | Into the High-Altitude Frontier

Today takes you to one of the most remote and memorable sections of the expedition. After an early breakfast, begin your excursion towards Bum La Pass, situated at approximately 15,200 feet near the India–China border.
At Bum La, experience one of India's most significant high-altitude border destinations before continuing towards the beautiful Madhuri Lake. Surrounded by rugged Himalayan mountains, the lake provides one of the most striking landscapes of the journey.
Continue exploring the surrounding high-altitude landscapes before making your way back towards Tawang by evening. Return to the hotel, enjoy dinner and rest after a full day at high altitude.

Tawang to Sangti Valley | From High Mountains to Riverside Landscapes

After breakfast, leave Tawang behind and begin your journey towards Sangti Valley. Having spent the previous days surrounded by the high-altitude landscapes of Tawang, today's ride takes you through a gradual change in scenery as you descend towards greener valleys.
The road winds through mountain valleys, pine forests and remote Himalayan villages, offering a quieter and more relaxed riding experience. The changing landscapes make this section of the journey as much about the ride itself as the destination.
By evening, arrive at Sangti Valley and check in to your stay. Take some time to unwind beside the river and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the valley.

Sangti Valley to Kaziranga | From the Himalayas to Assam

After breakfast, begin the descent from Arunachal Pradesh towards the plains of Assam. As you leave the mountains behind, the terrain gradually changes from winding Himalayan roads to rolling landscapes, forests and the tea estates of Assam.
Continue towards Kaziranga National Park, one of Assam's most celebrated natural destinations. Arrive by evening and check in to your camp or accommodation.
After the day's ride, enjoy a traditional Assamese dinner and spend the evening relaxing with the group under the peaceful surroundings of Kaziranga.

Kaziranga to Guwahati | Wildlife & The Final Ride

Begin the morning with a jeep safari through Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its rich biodiversity and iconic one-horned rhinoceros.
After the safari, return to the accommodation, freshen up and prepare for the final ride of the expedition. Begin your journey towards Guwahati, travelling through the lush landscapes of Assam as you gradually make your way back to the gateway city.
Arrive in Guwahati and check in to your hotel. In the evening, come together with your fellow riders for a farewell dinner — a chance to look back on the mountain roads, high-altitude passes, remote valleys and experiences shared throughout the journey.

Daily Itinenary

The Adventure Begins in Guwahati

Arrive in Guwahati throughout the day and settle in for an overnight stay before the expedition begins. This is the staging point for the journey, where the group gets organised for the days ahead. Motorcycle travellers can have their bikes inspected and luggage secured, while all travellers can prepare for the mountain route ahead. In the evening, the tour captain conducts a formal briefing covering the route, travel requirements, safety considerations and what to expect during the expedition. There is no long-distance travel today — the focus is on preparation, meeting the group and getting ready for the climb from Assam's plains into the mountains of Arunachal Pradesh.

Leaving the Plains, Entering the Mountains

The journey leaves the flat plains of Guwahati and heads towards the Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border, crossing into Arunachal around Bhalukpong. From here, the landscape begins to change as the route climbs through dense subtropical forest, following the Kameng River deeper into the foothills. The warm and humid conditions of the plains gradually give way to cooler mountain air as the road begins to twist and climb. For motorcycle travellers, this is the first real introduction to the winding roads, hairpins and changing riding conditions of the expedition, while SUV travellers experience the same transition from the plains into the mountain terrain. Jamiri provides a relatively moderate first mountain day before the route reaches higher elevations.

Deeper Into the Arunachal Mountains

From Jamiri, the route continues steadily towards Jung, taking the group deeper into the mountains and through changing forest landscapes as the elevation increases. The road alternates between stretches of decent tarmac and sections that require more careful navigation, particularly around the remote border-area roads. Along the way, waterfalls, river crossings and changing terrain add to the character of the journey, while the air becomes noticeably cooler as the group gains altitude. The day gradually prepares travellers for the more demanding sections ahead. By the time the group reaches Jung for the night, the landscape has changed considerably from the forests and foothills encountered earlier in the expedition, marking the final stage before the journey pushes towards the high mountain passes.

The Ultimate Mountain Challenge

This is the expedition's most demanding day, taking the group from Jung towards Mago and onward to Gongkhar La Lake before descending into the Tawang valley. The route becomes increasingly remote as the journey progresses, with narrow and broken sections of road, limited settlements and long stretches surrounded by high-altitude terrain. Beyond Mago, the landscape turns distinctly alpine, with bare ridgelines, cold winds and thin air as the elevation rises above 4,000 metres in stretches. The journey requires careful and deliberate travel through loose gravel, steep switchbacks and occasional snow patches. After reaching the high point, the route begins its descent towards Tawang, where the group arrives by evening after one of the most challenging and remote sections of the expedition.

A Day to Discover Tawang

After the demanding journey into Tawang, Day 5 provides a welcome break from long-distance travel. The day is centred around exploring Tawang and experiencing some of the area's important landmarks and local surroundings. Visit the historic Tawang Monastery, spend time at the war memorial and explore the local markets before returning to the town for the evening. This is also an opportunity to slow the pace after the previous day's high-altitude journey and prepare for the next major excursion. While there is no long-distance route today, the group may use the available vehicles for short local journeys around Tawang as they explore the town and its surroundings.

Into the High-Altitude Borderlands

The journey continues from Tawang towards Ptso Lake, Madhuri Lake and the legendary Bumla Pass before returning to Tawang the same day. The route climbs rapidly out of the Tawang valley into stark, treeless high-altitude terrain, with glacial lakes appearing along the way. Beyond Madhuri Lake, the road continues towards Bumla Pass at approximately 4,600 metres, where cold temperatures, thin air and changing road conditions add another layer of challenge to the journey. The group travels carefully through this high-altitude landscape before beginning the return journey to Tawang. As daylight fades and temperatures drop, the descent brings the group back through the same dramatic mountain terrain before reaching Tawang for the night.

Leaving the High Mountains Behind

The journey now begins its long descent from Tawang, reversing much of the climb experienced earlier in the expedition. The route travels through Jang and Dirang as the landscape gradually changes from high-altitude alpine terrain to greener mountain valleys and forested surroundings. As the elevation falls, the air becomes warmer and vegetation becomes more abundant. The route eventually reaches Sangti Valley, a peaceful river valley surrounded by pine forests and apple orchards. After the demanding high-altitude sections of the previous days, this part of the journey offers a noticeably more relaxed landscape, with wider curves and a gentler route providing an opportunity to take in the scenery and enjoy the changing character of Arunachal Pradesh.

One Last Ride Through the Hills

The final major travel day begins in Sangti Valley and continues through Shergaon before the route gradually descends out of the mountains towards the Assam plains. The journey through Shergaon brings open meadows, highland villages and the final stretches of mountain scenery before the road begins its long descent towards Tezpur. As the landscape opens up, the winding mountain roads give way to faster and more open highway stretches, marking the transition back to the plains. The group continues towards Guwahati, arriving by evening for an overnight halt. After several days among the high mountains of Arunachal Pradesh, this final descent marks the closing stage of the main expedition route.

One Last Stop Before Home

The expedition comes to a close with a short journey to Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati. Take some time to visit one of the region's important landmarks before returning for departure arrangements. After the final stop, travellers can begin their onward journey from Guwahati, bringing the expedition from the plains, through the forests and mountains of Arunachal Pradesh, and back to where it began. With the final day kept relatively short, there is time to complete the departure formalities without adding another long-distance journey to the end of the trip.
